Cyprus has the potential to generate 40% of its energy from solar power by 2030, stated Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (), in a
The Group offers every household in Cyprus the possibility of saving on energy consumption by utilising solar energy. To date, hundreds of residential consumers have entrusted the Group with energy solutions of photovoltaic systems,
Electricity in Cyprus is managed by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus. Power is primarily generated at three fuel oil-burning stations but the use of distributed renewable energy is expanding. About 97% of the primary energy use was imported in 2008.
The goal of the Cyprus Energy Agency for the period 2020-2030 is to study energy storage solutions and to promote policies that will support the Energy Transition of Cyprus in an environmentally sustainable way. " Renewable Energy Sources in Cyprus - Sponsorship plan for the promotion of RES and energy saving - Photovoltaic Systems.
Cyprus has set out to attain a higher share of renewables, and this roadmap helps to assess op-timal investment strategies in the power sector. Solar PV and wind power will play a major role in the roadmap to 2030. Roadmap findings will play an important role to revise existing energy policies and develop new ones.
Based on this analysis, between 25% and 40% of Cyprus’ electricity supply can come from renewables in 2030, in the economically optimal mix. Solar PV is the predominant renewable energy technology in all scenarios, supplying between 15% and 27% of the electricity consumed in Cyprus in 2030.
The combination of RES, with the rapidly evolving energy storage technologies, make this goal achievable, even for Cyprus. The goal of the Cyprus Energy Agency for the period 2020-2030 is to study energy storage solutions and to promote policies that will support the Energy Transition of Cyprus in an environmentally sustainable way. In 2011 the Cypriot Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) announced a number of steps aimed at facilitating development of photovoltaics in Cyprus. Among them is the large-scale application of net metering. CERA aims to reduce electricity prices for the households where net metering is applied, via fuel saving and carbon dioxide reduction.
