For the heating and cooling sector, Cyprus foresees a target of 39.4%. In the transport sector, Cyprus plans to achieve 14% share of renewable energy by 2030. Cyprus supports PV and biogas/biomass for electricity production, while it also leans on onshore wind to achieve RES targets.
Cyprus supports PV and biogas/biomass for electricity production, while it also leans on onshore wind to achieve RES targets. Most RES electricity is connected through net-metering where it assumes energy is used for own consumption and surplus injected to the grid. Cyprus is currently not interconnected.
Although lower than the EU average, the share of renewables in total energy supply can be regarded as satisfactory since Cyprus has overachieved the binding 13% national RES target – it attained a 17.0% share according to official statistics.
Based on this analysis, between 25% and 40% of Cyprus’ electricity supply can come from renewables in 2030, in the economically optimal mix. Solar PV is the predominant renewable energy technology in all scenarios, supplying between 15% and 27% of the electricity consumed in Cyprus in 2030.
The two other main areas of REPowerEU – diversifying energy supply and reduction of fossil fuel use in industry – are less pertinent for Cyprus for the reasons explained below, hence the relevant investments and reforms are included under the areas of energy savings and renewable energy.
According to its Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, Cyprus aims to achieve at least 22.9% renewable energy (RES) in final energy consumption by 2030. Although the RES share in the electricity sector was only 9.8% in 2019, Cyprus intends to increase the share of renewables in the electricity sector to 30.3% by 2030.
