The heat affected zone, where the properties of the metal have been changed from rapid heating and cooling, is localized to a small area around the weld spot.
Supercapacitors tend to have higher internal series resistance than a corresponding electrolytic. For example, this 1.6 F, 16 VDC supercap bank could theoretically store ~200 J, but on connecting to the low-impedance spot welder, most of the energy is lost heating the capacitors. Perhaps two or three of these banks might suffice.
Capacitive discharge resistance welding uses large capacitors to store energy for quick release. Figure 1 shows a typical capacitor discharge curve. Capacitive resistance welders have many advantages. Weld nugget formation takes place during the first few milli-seconds.
In this project I designed and built a prototype of USB-C powered capacitive discharge spot welder. It can be used to weld nickel strips to battery packs. This allows re-building battery packs for various devices, especially ones that are no longer maintained by the manufacturers.
Of course It certainly is possible to use supercapacitors in a spot welder, as I saw some existing designs, but they usually have precise pulse control with MOSFETs and microcontrollers, and these supercaps are treated in similar way as batteries. Regular electrolytic capacitors are easier to use without sophisticated pulse control system.
