At the same time as launching a call for proposals on virtual power plants (VPPs), Singapore is considering mechanisms such as demand response, DERMS and digital twins to enhance its electricity grid system.
“Singapore has one of the most reliable electricity systems in the world. This is made possible because we deploy different power generation technologies that complement each other,” said Dr Darwin Chia, Director of the Electricity System Department at the Energy Market Authority.
The mechanisms are identified in a Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap, which is being developed by the country’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Singapore Power Group (SP) to outline challenges that face the country’s changing power system. Specifically, the roadmap identifies key focus areas to transform the electricity grid, including:
The EMA has invited submissions for VPP sandbox proposals by 31 December 2024. Singapore is looking to virtual power plants and different digital systems as DERs continue to proliferate the power grid.
Yet, not many are aware of what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to generating electricity in Singapore. Dr Darwin Chia, Director of the Electricity System Department, oversees the planning, development and timely implementation of new generation plantings as well as the performance of the electricity system infrastructure.
The sandbox will foster collaboration and push the boundaries of Singapore’s future grid capabilities. Mr Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said, “Fostering innovation and collaboration with stakeholders is crucial to enhance Singapore’s grid capabilities.
