The overall energy supply in Sudan is mainly produced from crude oil, hydroelectricity, biomass, and renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal energy. As shown in Fig. 1 (a), the largest energy supplier is biomass, which contributes 52% of the total energy consumption in Sudan.
Sudan has various energy resources, both renewable and non-renewable. However, the country still suffers a massive energy shortfall, and governmental energy policies are insufficient to provide the essential energy needs for most of Sudan's population.
As for Ethiopia, Sudan imports electricity at a price of 4.5 cents/kilowatt . In August 2021, the Minister of Energy and Petroleum declared that the Sudanese energy sector needed urgent maintenance and restructuring at a cost of $3 billion, another indicator of the dire financial needs of the sector .
There has been massive progress in Sudan's energy sector, especially the increase in renewable sources has improved the scenario of the population's energy deficit; according to a recent study, the number of people lacking access to electricity in Sudan decreased from 70% of the total population in 2010 to only 47% in 2019 ( Khan et al., 2022 ).
Accordingly, Sudan's key national energy strategy is increasing access to energy services, improving energy efficiency, and scaling up various renewable energy sources in the energy mix ( Sudan National Report, 2019 ). Currently, there are several LHPs for electricity generation in Sudan.
