EPRI’s battery energy storage system database has tracked over 50 utility-scale battery failures, most of which occurred in the last four years. One fire resulted in life-threatening injuries to first responders. These incidents represent a 1 to 2 percent failure rate across the 12.5 G

The BESS Failure Incident Database [1] was initiated in 2021 as part of a wider suite of BESS safety research after the concentration of lithium ion BESS fires in South Korea and the Surprise, AZ, incident in the US. The database was
The report – "Considerations for Fire Service Response to Residential Battery Energy Storage System Incidents" – offers new data on how lithium fires ignite and spread and urges support
Large-scale energy storage system: safety and risk assessment Ernest Hiong Yew Moa1 and Yun Ii Go1* Incidents of battery storage facility res and explosions are reported every year since
A recent fire at a battery storage facility in California is bringing fresh attention to safety issues tied to energy storage as the technology grows in deployment across the U.S.
The global installed capacity of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) has dramatically increased over the last five years. While recent fires afflicting some of these
The American Clean Power Association (ACP) has launched a new guide aimed at helping first responders understand and deal with battery storage safety incidents. Including recommendations for pre-incident planning
The deployment of energy storage systems, especially lithium-ion batteries, has been growing significantly during the past decades. However, among this wide utilization,
As the size and energy storage capacity of the battery systems increase, new safety concerns appear. To reduce the safety risk associated with large battery systems, it is imperative to consider and test the safety at all
A recent fire at a battery storage facility in California is bringing fresh attention to safety issues tied to energy storage as the technology grows in deployment across the U.S. The fire occurred in September 2022 at Pacific
Energy storage systems (ESSs) offer a practical solution to store energy harnessed from renewable energy sources and provide a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels for power generation by releasing it when required,
Additional ESS-specific guidance is provided in the NFPA Energy Storage Systems Safety Fact Sheet [B10]. NFPA 855 requires several submittals to the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ),
Energy storage is a resilience enabling and reliability enhancing technology. Across the country, states are choosing energy storage as the best and most cost-effective way to improve grid resilience and reliability. ACP has compiled
Note that the Stationary Energy Storage Failure Incidents table tracks both utility-scale and C&I system failures. It is instructive to compare the number of failure incidents over time against the deployment of BESS. The graph to the right looks at the failure rate per cumulative deployed capacity, up to 12/31/2023.

Other Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks incidents that do not fit the criteria for the first table. This could include failures involving the manufacturing, transportation, storage, and recycling of energy storage. Residential energy storage system failures are not currently tracked.
Stationary Energy Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) failures. Other Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks incidents that do not fit the criteria for the first table. This could include failures involving the manufacturing, transportation, storage, and recycling of energy storage.
Incidents of battery storage facility fires and explosions are reported every year since 2018, resulting in human injuries, and millions of US dollars in loss of asset and operation.
This work describes an improved risk assessment approach for analyzing safety designs in the battery energy storage system incorporated in large-scale solar to improve accident prevention and mitigation, via incorporating probabilistic event tree and systems theoretic analysis. The causal factors and mitigation measures are presented.
