BEIJING/SHANGHAI, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) has acquired land in Shanghai for a megapack battery manufacturing plant with production expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2024, Chinese state media reported on Friday.
Megapack contributes about 80 percent of the revenue to Tesla's energy storage business, the LatePost story noted.
It appears that Tesla China has secured another battery supplier for its upcoming Shanghai Megafactory. As per recent reports, Tesla China has reportedly struck a deal with BYD’s battery unit FinDreams. The BYD battery unit will reportedly start supplying batteries to the Shanghai Megafactory from the first quarter of 2025.
Gong Wei, vice president of Lingang Group, said the Megapacks would be used for energy storage in a data center in the Lin-gang Special Area, as part of its efforts to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
The U.S. company already has a factory for its Megapacks in California, which has an annual capacity of 10,000 units. Each Megapack unit can store over 3.9 megawatt-hours of energy, sufficient to power approximately 3,600 households for one hour. As the global renewables powerhouse, China is a major market for energy storage.
