Though pumped hydro currently dominates global storage capacity, electrochemical is growing the fastest. Generally, pumped hydro storage is used for longer-term storage compared to battery storage, which is often used on a day-to-day scale. Both distributed and centralized storage can be system inte

Increased demand for “green” hydrogen will drive down the cost of green hydrogen production technologies, eventually making power generation via hydrogen more cost competitive.

The model results presented in this chapter focus on the value of energy storage enabled by its arbitrage function in future electricity systems. Energy storage makes it possible to defer investments in generation and transmission, reduce VRE curtailment, reduce thermal generator startups, and reduce transmission losses.
The latter enables time-shifting of energy supply and is function- ally central to the other grid applications provided by energy storage. The model results presented in this chapter focus on the value of energy storage enabled by its arbitrage function in future electricity systems.
