Energy storage for oceangoing ships is very challenging with current technology and seems not feasible commercially in near future due to long and steady voyages and high-power requirements. However, hybrid power generation and propulsion are feasible for certain operational modes .
Using a multi-source energy system allows to optimize and improve ship power generation. While the combination of alternative energy sources increases the capital expenditures, thanks to the ability to reach higher efficiencies the operational expenditures decreases. Fig. 1.
An example of a soft sail-powered vessel is the 100% fossil fuel-free cargo ship—B9 ship (Fig. 4 c). B9 ship is equipped with a hybrid system that uses wind energy and a biogas-powered engine where 60% of the power is harnessed by wind whereas the remaining 40% is by liquid biomethane derived from municipal waste [57, 58].
When implementing dynamic control for HESSes, the real-time allocation of energy and power is critical. It is possible to improve the overall control performance and meet requirements of a ship power system demands on a HESS through dynamic control.
This Rigid Sail can be installed on existing vessels with minimal modification. To aim at realisation of retractable Rigid Sail, shape, arrangement and control system of the Rigid Sail are studied and designed. Our group plans to install it on an actual vessel in 2026 and commercialise it in 2027.
