Europe and China are leading the installation of new pumped storage capacity – fuelled by the motion of water. Batteries are now being built at grid-scale in countries including
By definition, a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is a type of energy storage solution, a collection of large batteries within a container, that can store and discharge electrical energy
Five projects based across the UK will benefit from a share of over £32 million in the second phase of the Longer Duration Energy Storage (LODES) competition, to develop
These levels of storage require the UK to have 4-10 times more than its current total gas storage capacity of 2.9 billion m³, of which c. 2 billion is underground storage, one of
As a new year begins, we asked some of our team what they thought would be some of the key trends that will influence the battery energy storage sector over the next twelve months. From technological
Friday, 10 March 2023 (Morgan Lewis) Trends in energy storage around the globe include regulations and initiatives in the European Union, and the UK government''s push for new energy storage
Key trends include grid energy storage, long-duration energy storage, and lithium batteries. This report was last updated in July 2024. This energy storage report serves as a reference for stakeholders within the industry, investors,
The energy storage market in the UK is currently experiencing substantial growth, as evidenced by the current operational capacity of 4.6GW/5.9GWh, projected to increase to 7.4GW/11.6GWh by the end of 2024.
In September last year, UK-based battery energy storage asset owner and operator Varco Energy chose Fluence Energy UK Ltd., a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc. to provide one of its first
In the past few decades, electricity production depended on fossil fuels due to their reliability and efficiency [1].Fossil fuels have many effects on the environment and directly

Total installed capacity of utility-scale storage is now approaching 1.7 GW across 127 sites and the figure below shows annual installed energy storage capacity by project size. The UK installed 446 MW of utility-scale energy storage in 2021, close to the previous high seen back in 2018. Image: Solar Media Market Research.
The Electricity Act 1989 is the main piece of legislation governing electricity in Great Britain, which defines “energy storage.” Ofgem, the Great Britain energy regulator, clarified in 2020 that electricity storage is deemed to be electricity generation for the purposes of the Electricity Act 1989.
The total pipeline for UK energy storage is now at 61.5GW across 1,319 sites. Image: Solar Media Market Research The graphic above shows the submitted capacity of energy storage projects by project size and by quarter; the total pipeline has now reached 61.5GW across 1,310 sites.
So far, the most common size for energy storage sites has been 50MW (although sites are now being planned larger). However, battery storage capacity tends to be smaller when co-located with solar and other renewables. The planned capacity is becoming increasingly dominated by large-scale projects.
There are a range of emerging technologies including sodium-ion (Na-ion), hydrogen, and long-duration energy storage (LDES) that have significant potential. Na-ion batteries, for instance, offer a reduced environ-mental impact and safety benefits relative to lithium.
