Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. Two tugboats have moved a vast array of 12,000 solar panels, the size of four soccer pitches, to their mooring on Portugal's Alqueva reservoir in preparation to start up Europe's largest floating solar park in July.
Announced on Sunday, December 10, by the Portuguese Government, the project involves a base investment of €45 million. Set to be Europe’s largest floating photovoltaic park, it will be constructed in the Alqueva reservoir, nestled in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, close to the Spanish border near Extremadura.
The floating solar park also includes the installation of a battery with a storage capacity of 2MWh, another groundbreaking innovation. The floating solar park is part of Portugal’s plan to stop relying on imported fossil fuels that have increased in price since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Reuters.
The solar park was inaugurated in Portugal this Friday, July 15th, in an event that was attended by various Portuguese representatives: Prime Minister António Costa; Minister for the Environment and Climate Action, Duarte Cordeiro; and the Secretary of State for Environment and Energy, João Galamba.
Also, in Alqueva, EDP plans to install up to 154 MW of renewable capacity in a complete hybrid farm. Seven months after the beginning of the construction works, EDP's floating solar power plant in the south of Portugal (Alqueva) is ready to start generating power.
