By shifting a significant amount of power supply to natural gas, EDP reduces El Salvador’s reliance on diesel and heavy fuel oil-fired power generation, offsetting 600,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, and provides grid support to facilitate more renewable energy penetration, further diversifying the country’s energy mix.

This would also reduce the dependence on traditional thermal sources and, with that, the vulnerability to high oil prices that the country started to face in 2005. El Salvador is also one of the countries included in the SIEPAC project, which will integrate the electricity network of the country with the rest of the Central American region.
Despite the enormous challenges, including supply-chain disruptions, travel restrictions, airport closures, global financial volatility, and Salvadoran COVID-19 mitigation measures and regulations, the power plant began commercial operation in October 2022. In 2006, there were 11 generation companies in El Salvador, with 18 out of 22 generation plants in private hands and 97% of hydroelectric capacity owned by the public company CEL (Comisión Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa).
As the smallest country in Central America, El Salvador relies heavily on imported Heavy Fuel Oil-fired generators for its dispatched power. Our Project is expected to be the lowest cost thermal generator in the country, and it aims to supply 30% of the county’s total demand and significantly reduces its energy imports from 25% to about 5% in 2023.
