The Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) is a 100 percent government-owned entity, established in 1969 to supply environmentally friendly electricity to the people of Lesotho. Prior to LEC coming to fruition, electricity provision in the country was under the control of the Government of Lesotho.
The Lesotho Electricity Generation Company (LEGCO) is a company wholly owned by the Government of Lesotho. LEGCO was incorporated on the 29 th January 2020 as a public company under the Companies Act of 2011. It commenced its full operations on the 1 st September 2020.

The southern African nation of Lesotho is heavily reliant on imported electricity from neighbouring countries. Imported electricity comprised 41% of volume and 86% of cost. This put enormous pressure onto the Government of Lesotho and the state owned Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC).
Lesotho Government Contribution to this project is estimated at M220 million which will cover the costs of land compensations valued around M57 million, Tax obligations as well as operating costs of Lesotho Electricity Generation Company (LEGCO). The government is implementing 70MW solar electricity generation project at Ramarothole in Mafeteng.
After a monitored increase in demand for electricity was noted, both the Government of Lesotho and Eskom of South Africa entered into an agreement in which both parties would work together to supply Lesotho with quality electricity.
