Rwanda: Many of us want an overview of how much energy our country consumes, where it comes from, and if we''re making progress on decarbonizing our energy mix. This page provides the data for your chosen country across
From our analysis, the available energy resources can only maintain current population in Rwanda as a low-income country. To become an average middle-income country, Rwanda needs an equivalent of 3 M toe /yr
Abstract: This paper first discusses the current energy profile in Rwanda where it focuses on electrical energy status in order to evaluate the available power generation, transmission
The signing was witnessed by President Paul Kagame. The scope of the agreement covers energy products distribution (including LPG, and electric charging), supply of LPG as a substitute for burning biomass,
The energy sector in Rwanda is made up of three sub-sectors: power, hydrocarbon and new and renewable sources of energy. Amongst the renewable sources of energy are biomass, solar, peat, wind, geothermal and hydropower. Biomass is the most used and dominates both the demand and supply sides of the Rwandan economy.
The extent of grid electricity is limited and mainly concentrated near Kigali. Most of the country uses firewood as its main energy source. Rwanda is planning to expand from 276 MW of grid power in 2022 to 556 MW in 2024 and may import some additional electricity from neighboring countries.
Biomass (wood, agriculture residues, charcoal, peat and organic gas) constitutes the major source of energy accounting for 80.40% of the total energy. Fuel and electricity constitute respectively 6% and 0.90% of the total energy. The sources of energy and energy consumption sector by sector in Rwanda are presented in Fig. 1.
In its plans, with the support of donors, the Government of Rwanda has taken measures in order to supply energy in a more sustainable way. The national electricity utility ELECTROGAZ has started to renew the installed power stations and also to install new hydro power plants.
Created in 1976, ELECTROGAZ is a 100% publicly owned company, the unique power grid electricity supplier in the country. Power generation sources in Rwanda are presented in Table 1. ELECTROGAZ power generation comes from Mukungwa, Ntaruka, Gihira and Gisenyi power plants located in the North-Western region.
Traditional biomass – the burning of charcoal, crop waste, and other organic matter – is not included. This can be an important source in lower-income settings. Rwanda: How much of the country’s electricity comes from nuclear power? Nuclear power – alongside renewables – is a low-carbon source of electricity.
