The project is part of a Biden Administration effort to speed approval of major clean energy projects in order to decarbonize the U.S. electricity grid by 2035 — a feat that will
Battery storage is a way to optimize energy by storing power for use at a later time. The SGIP-ERB California focuses on installation of energy storage technologies to service communities
The CPUC authorized PG&E to issue a solicitation for energy storage projects to replace three power plants that would otherwise require reliability must-run (RMR) contracts.
The CPUC approved five energy storage contracts for a total of 497 megawatts (MW) of capacity, which are expected to provide 462 MW of capacity towards SCE’s portion of the 11,500 MW of clean energy capacity ordered by the CPUC in June 2021 in the integrated resource planning (IRP) proceeding.
The Gateway installation is the latest in a series of large battery energy storage projects in California, a state counting on energy storage to help supplement its baseload power supply, and replace generation lost due to the closure of thermal power plants.
The Gateway and Moss Landing projects are just two of the battery energy storage installations being developed across California, a state that has ramped up its use of renewable energy in recent years while phasing out electricity from coal, nuclear, and natural gas-fired power plants.

Gateway Energy Storage is currently energized at 230 MW and is on track to reach 250 MW this month, according to McCarthy. The project was launched and connected to CAISO’s grid in June, with an initial 62.5 MW of storage. LS Power said the project reached 200 MW of capacity on Aug. 1, with an additional 30 MW added on Aug. 17.
PG&E has selected offers for three energy storage projects from third-party owners, with a total capacity of 385.5 MW and 1,540 MWh. PG&E will not own one of these projects, which has a capacity of 182.5 MW and 730 MWh. The energy storage projects are being built to avoid the need to keep three Calpine gas-fired plants running as RMR resources and to shore up congestion issues in the region.
