South Sudan faces a serious energy crisis due to a number of factors, including devastating conflicts (e.g. 1955-172, 1983-2005 & 2013–present) and reliance on the fossil fuel source.
This means that South Sudan should have regulatory framework and good investment policies that can attract reputable companies that will bring technology and pool of expertise to develop the solar energy sector and associated power industries in the country.
In addition, the high electrical tariffs imposed on the industrial sector might deter many potential investors and have a negative effect on economic growth [ 37 ]. Further, Sudan’s energy sector is currently subsidised by the government. Government subsidies to the sector totalled $667 million in 2019.
Specifically, over 75% of firms surveyed in South Sudan complained that lack of energy hinders business operation. Second, lack of electricity drives up costs as businesses and families try to produce their own power, which is extremely expensive.
