Energy efficiency is not energy conservation. Energy conservation is reducing or going without a service to save energy. For example: Turning off a light is energy conservation. Replacing an incandescent lamp with a compact fluorescent lamp (which uses much less energy to produce the same amount of light) is energy efficiency.
The Barbados Light & Power Company (BLPC), has in recent years, communicated its commitment to 100% renewable energy in Barbados through its 100/100 vision. Barbados continues to maintain a leadership position in solar energy within the Caribbean. Building on a successful Renewable Energy Rider program which has seen 9MW of distributed solar PV installed, the electricity market has finally opened up to independent power producers (IPPs) to develop utility scale solar projects.
The BNEP provides a basis for building on these successes while seeking to expand the use of these and other renewable energy technologies such as wind and biofuels. However, even as Barbados promotes the development of renewable energy, there are ongoing plans to explore for fossil fuel resources offshore.
Barbados’ electricity costs approximately $0.28 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This is lower than the Caribbean regional average of $0.33/kWh, as shown in the Energy Snapshot Barbados.
