May 2023 – Collie Battery project announced, and community consultation commenced. Batteries support increased amounts of renewable energy in WA by providing grid services, such as storing renewable energy and discharging it at times when it’s needed most.
Synergy has awarded SCEE Electrical a $160 million contract for the main works of the Collie BESS, including civil, electrical and major equipment installation works. The WA Government announced that construction had commenced on the project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
Synergy, a WA Government State-Owned Corporation, is developing a 500 megawatt (MW) / 2,000-megawatt hour (MWh) battery at a site in Collie. The project is separate to the 219 MW / 877 MWh Collie Battery, also being delivered in Collie.
The site is located in the Shire of Collie and as indicated by the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council website; it sits within the Gnaala Karla Booja Land Use Agreement Area. The site is zoned Rural under the Shire’s Local Planning Scheme No. 6 and is adjacent to the Coolangatta Industrial Locality.
