High-energy-density lithium (Li)-metal batteries (LMBs) suffer from short life spans caused by "dead" Li and dendrites. The generation of a stable, artificial solid–electrolyte

A material found in the wood of our plants is being trialled as a way to produce sustainable battery power. Finnish designers Stora Enso have built a production facility costing €10 million that will create renewable bio-based carbon by turning trees into batteries. This will be achieved by the use of a wood-based material called lignin.
The source for the wood batteries will be from Nordic forests under sustainable management. Through the partnership, Northvolt will be responsible for cell design, production process development, and scale-up of the technology. While Stora Enso will provide the wood-based anode material lignin.
The excellent flexibility of the wood cathode due to the removal of lignin and hemicellulose by chemical treatment, enables the wood-based Li–CO 2 battery to process excellent electrochemical performance, which subsequently makes it a promising candidate for wearable energy storage devices in various applications. The wood, 3D, porous, straight-channel structure provides more space and channels for the storage and transmission of electrolyte ions, and its integrity has been preserved regardless of what kind of treatment was applied and without the use of polymer binder.
In recent years, researchers at home and abroad have taken advantage of this feature (three-dimensional porous structure, a large number of vertically arranged straight channels and low bending) and applied wood in the field of electrochemical energy storage.
Companies worldwide are working on a sustainable power storage solution using renewable biowaste called lignin to make wood batteries. One of the largest private forest owners in the world, Stora Enso, recently built a production facility worth €10 million to create bio-based carbon by turning trees into batteries.
