The guidelines provided in NFPA 855 (Standard for the Installation of Energy Storage Systems) and Chapter 1207 (Electrical Energy Storage Systems) of the International Fire Code are the first steps. There has been a fair amount of news about battery storage systems being involved in fire and explosion incidents around the world. Do not forget that these are not the only safety issues when dealing with batteries. Battery systems pose unique electrical safety hazards.
Therefore, if you install multiple storage units, you have to space them three feet apart unless the manufacturer has already done large-scale fire testing and can prove closer spacing will not cause fire to propagate between adjacent units.
