South Africa’s biggest solar battery storage system started feeding power into Eskom’s grid in mid-December 2023. Scatec ASA announced its Kenhardt hybrid solar and battery facility in the Northern Cape officially started producing and supplying electricity to the national grid on 11 December 2023.
“Together with our partners, we are pleased to launch this major solar power generation and storage project in South Africa. Thanks to its innovative hybrid design, it will enable us to supply continuous green electricity over a longer period and beyond the hours of sunshine.
With an installed solar capacity of 540 MW of PV, and a battery storage capacity of 225MW/1,140MWh, the plant is designed to deliver 150 MW of dispatchable power from 5 am to 9.30 pm year-round to the national grid under a 20-year power purchase agreement with South Africa’s national power utility company, Eskom.
It is owned by Norwegian renewables developer Scatec ASA. The company holds a 51% stake in the $1 billion project, marked as the largest commitment in its history. South African investment company H1 Holdings holds 49%. Power from the facility will be sold to South African state-owned utility Eskom, under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
Located in the Northern Cape province, the site will supply dispatchable renewable electricity to the South African national grid for twenty years, equivalent to over 400 GWh per year.
