To date, Enel Green Power has three battery energy storage systems in operation in Italy, with a total capacity of 133 MW.
This pioneering spirit evolved with the advent of new renewables, such as solar and wind, which are not, however, programmable. Technological advances aim to make even this energy available at all times through BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), which store it for release when necessary.

BESS uses a specific technique for storage: since an electric current is a flow of electrical charges, a battery is charged by accumulating charges of particular materials (called electrolytes) at one of the two poles, from which they then flow to the other pole in the discharge phase.
One aspect is important to highlight: although stand-alone BESS will be immediately adjacent to renewable energy plants (preferably in the same area), the energy fed into the grid by standalone BESS will not benefit from guarantees of origin or be considered green.
