Although Brazil has a high share of renewable generation, fossil sources still play a significant role, with coal-fired power plants contributing to large emissions. The Jorge Lacerda Complex is the largest coal-fired power plant in Brazil.
Coal-fired power plants represent approximately 25% of emissions from the thermoelectric sector [ 21, 22 ]. There are currently ten coal-fired thermal power plants in operation in Brazil, totaling 3.2 GW of installed power, mostly concentrated in the coal-producing South region [ 23 ].
Compared to the world, the Brazilian energy supply mix has huge participation of renewable sources, approximately 48%, related to emissions of around 400 Mt CO 2 -eq in 2020 (EPE 2021b). As mentioned, in the electric sector, this participation is even bigger.

Employing energy system analyses, we examine the integration of e-kerosene production into Brazil’s national energy supplies. We introduce PyPSA-Brazil, an open-source energy system optimisation model grounded in public data.
