The compressibility of a gas is utilised in hydraulic accumulators for storing fluids. HYDAC diaphragm accumulators are based on this principle, using nitrogen as the compressible medium. Diaphragm accumulators consist of a fluid section and a gas section with the diaphragm acting as a gas-tight separation element.
The fluid section is connected to the hydraulic circuit so that the diaphragm accumulator draws in fluid when the pressure increases and the gas is compressed. When the pressure drops, the compressed gas expands and forces the stored fluid into the circuit. Set into the base of the diaphragm is a valve plate.
Precharge pressure forces fluid from the accumulator into the system. Minimum system pressure is reached. The accumulator has discharged its design maximum volume of fluid back into the system. When selecting an accumulator for a particular application, both hydraulic system and accumulator performance criteria should be considered.
The diaphragm provides excellent gas and fluid separation. ADE accumulators are offered with diaphragms in nitrile (NBR) or epichlorohydrine (ECO) compounds; both are suitable for use with mineral oil compounds, while ECO diaphragms provide exceptional low temperature performance for demanding mobile applications.
Piston accumulators are available in a choice of diameters and lengths for a given capacity, whereas bladder and diaphragm accumulators are frequently ofered in only one size per capacity, and fewer sizes are available. Piston accumulators can also be built to custom lengths for applications in which available space is critical.
